Beautiful In Black

Maggie was scheduled to be euthanized when HCWS rescued her.

Written by volunteer Carol Lisowski

Recently HCWS made another emergency rescue saving a beautiful year-old flat-coated retriever on her last day at an Arizona animal shelter. Originally named “Matilda,” Maggie has now found her forever home with Michelle Terriano. All black, as is most common with the flat-coated retriever breed, and with almond-shaped eyes, Maggie has the sweetest temperament and loves to lay on her back on the couch telling Michelle to rub her tummy.

Michelle initially wasn’t looking for a dog to adopt as she had already had two dogs. Suddenly losing Bella to cancer, and exactly one month to the day of Bella’s passing, also losing Shadow who at 14+ years was just tired and very sad to have lost her friend, left an emptiness and so she began talking to HCWS. She kept telling the adoption coordinator that she really wasn’t ready to think of getting another dog yet. Something was drawing her to look at the dogs up for adoption though. When she saw Maggie’s picture and heard her story, Michelle and her sister went to Petsmart on Rainbow & 215 to meet her. Maggie was not very interested in Michelle. It was obvious she was skittish around men and loud noises. But how could anyone resist such a big, beautiful girl? She went home with Michelle.

Maggie very quickly acclimated to her new home and has gotten more comfortable as time has gone by. In fact, she had pretty much let Michele know from the start that she was sleeping with her on the bed. Her favorite toy is a stuffed bear which she proudly carries around in her mouth, as Retrievers do. She is good with other dogs at the dog park and has even made friends with men at the park. Life is good for Maggie.

Flat-coated retrievers have great temperaments, are good with children, and are often used as bird dogs. Less common than a Golden or Labrador Retriever, her original owner probably paid quite a lot of money for her, only to throw her away.

If you choose to bring a pet into your life, make the commitment to give that animal a forever home and part of your family. Visit http://www.hcws.org to see other pets that are looking for their forever home.

Life is good for Maggie and her new mom.

Heaven Can Wait adoptions are held each Thursday – Sunday for cats and every Saturday for dogs.  The Adoption Center is located inside PetSmart off I-215 and S. Rainbow in the Arroyo Crossing Center.
