Lose A Pound With Your Hound Memory Walk – October 23, 2011

Written by volunteer Lucy Bobeck

Heaven Can Wait Animal Society’s (HCWS) 11th Annual “Lose A Pound With Your Hound” Memory Walk was held on a very sunny Sunday.

Wayne Bunker Family Park in North Las Vegas was bustling with vendors’ stalls and dogs being spoiled in the best way, as caring guardians took their hounds to lose a pound.

Elvis made an appearance to sing ‘Hound Dog’ to all the furry friends assembled by the stage. It’s hard to upstage Elvis, but beloved HCWS President, Harold Vosko thanked all the walkers bringing their dogs and one pig :-)

Lose a pound has a fun atmosphere, but Harold reminded the crowd that the Memory Walk honors the 30,000+ lost and abandoned animals that are euthanized every year in the Las Vegas valley. The symbolic paper “collars” lining the dog walk represent each animal euthanized. Dog walkers, such as Leann from Coronado High School’s Animal Advocates come to support HCWS as it is a local charity that supports preventative action via HCWS’ spay and neuter clinic.

World-famous impressionist, Rich Little turned everyone’s thoughts to the goal that Las Vegas dogs and cats have a bright future. Mr. Little took to the stage and said he had a little donation – $100,000!

You can also make a difference for homeless dogs and cats in Las Vegas with a small donation.

Heaven Can Wait Animal Society’s dog walk is a mile of rest stops for snacks and games of skill such as the “poop toss”. Back at the vendor market; food, music, paw painting, pet psychic and paw reading were available reminding us how much fun responsible pet ownership is.

Rachel was in her red riding hood costume with her German Shepherd dog dressed as a wolf hoping to win a top prize in the pet costume contest – one of many contests for all to enjoy. Dog walker Cynthia Lindell with her dogs, Sparky and Bruce said “keep it local!”

Impressionist Rich Little Will Make Donation At Lose A Pound Walk

Rich Little and Marie. The celebrity impressionist will donate $100,000 to HCWS at Lose A Pound Memory Walk.

Celebrity impressionist Rich Little joins Heaven Can Wait Animal Society to pay tribute to the more than 30,000 shelter animals that were euthanized in 2010 with the “Lose A Pound With Your Hound” Memory Walk on Sunday, October 23 located at Bunker Family Park. Registration begins at 9 a.m. and the walk starts at 10 a.m.

Little will be at the event to showcase his support as well as to donate $100,000 to the organization that brings awareness to the devastating amount of cats and dogs that are euthanized each year.

With his commitment to the animal community, Rich Little will join families and their furry friends in the festivities of the day including paw painting, food, music, mobile dog grooming and much more. Pet owners can also “Buy A Collar For A Dollar” to be a part of the chain of collars that will be displayed during the walk to represent the thousands of animals that have been lost due to euthanization.

Pre-registration for the walk is $25 and it is $30 the day of the walk. A family four pack is offered at $40 while children under the age of five are free. To register online or to start a team visit hcws.org.

Lose a Pound with Your Hound – A Howling Success!

By Carol Lisowski, HCWS Volunteer

From the tiniest Chihuahuas to Old English Sheepdogs, they came from all parts of the city to walk with their families in Heaven Can Wait’s 10th Annual Lose a Pound With Your Hound Memory Walk at Bunker Family Park on Sunday, October 17th. The day couldn’t have more perfect with the cooler weather, festive atmosphere, and dogs and puppies everywhere you looked.

There was something for everyone…from the Memory Walk to contests, prizes, games, paw painting, psychic pet and paw reading, photo booth with instant photos of owners with their dogs, vendor bazaars, mobile dog grooming, obstacle course demonstrations, music (dog-themed, of course – “Who Let the Dogs Out” and “Chase the Cat”) and much, much more.  Even Elvis made an appearance, and after performing for the crowd, participated in judging and handing out awards to the winners of the various contests.

The walk itself began around the retention basin and then back to the park walkways, which were lined with the symbolic collars representing over 30,000 animals that are euthanized in our community each year. The majority of the walkers were first-timers to this walk or were on their 2nd or 3rd year, but they all said they would be back next year.

It was a general consensus from all of the humans that this was a hugely successful event for Heaven Can Wait Animal Society, and a barking good time was had by all.
